TYPES OF CUTTING EDGE

All knives differ from each other not only because the manufacturer tries to make each model original and memorable. In many ways, the shape and dimensions of the knife is determined precisely by its purpose and scope of application. That is why in something elegant fillet knives with a long and narrow blade are not suitable for hiking and working with small branches, and tourist models do not allow to easily cut some types of products.

TYPES

To date, all knives have a certain type of sharpening, so that they are great for doing this or that job.

Smooth

Smooth sharpening is found in most knives with a fixed or folding blade and for many users is the most familiar. Moreover, this type of sharpening is used in knives from time immemorial, as the ease of execution and maintenance is complemented by good versatility, making these knives suitable for a wide range of tasks.

The advantages of a smooth sharpening of the cutting edge can also be attributed to high efficiency when working with soft materials in the case of a small angle of grinding, and ease of working with hard materials with a small angle of grinding.

The disadvantage is that knives with smooth sharpening are poorly suited for working with fibrous materials and when cutting, for example, ropes, such a knife will get blunt pretty quickly.

For sharpening a blade with a smooth cutting edge, even the simplest grinding stone will often be sufficient, making it easy to maintain such knives in the field.

Serraytor

This type of sharpening, both in appearance and in principle of operation, is similar to a saw. Most often, such a cutting edge is a set of sharpened teeth of the same or different shape. Due to this shape, it is possible to increase the area of the cutting edge without changing the blade length, which has a positive effect on the cutting efficiency.

The advantages of such sharpening are high efficiency, especially when working with fibrous materials and excellent wear resistance. As a rule, this kind of sharpening stays sharper rather than smooth.

Unfortunately, this type of sharpening also has disadvantages. For example, knives with such sharpening of the cutting edge are poorly suited for working with fabrics. In addition, for sharpening the serraitor, you need to use special grinding stones, which are sometimes difficult to find even in urban environments, not to mention the cases of sharpening such a blade during a hike.

Combined sharpening

Combined sharpening is a great choice for a camping knife. This type of cutting edge is characterized by the presence of both smooth and serreytor sharpening. At the same time, most often from the tip of the blade and approximately to the “center” of the cutting edge, there is a smooth sharpening, and further, to the very base of the blade - serreytor. Such a knife can cut both food and cut the rope or slings.

The advantage of the above sharpening is the high versatility and ability to work effectively with different types of materials.
